Today on the Google home page throughout all Google properties worldwide is a Google Doodle, aka Google logo, remembering the life of Alessandro Volta on his 270th Birthday.
Alessandro Volta is credited for inventing the first electrical battery, which all of of find incredibly dependent on these days. He specifically invented the Voltaic Pile, the first battery that could continuously provide an electrical current to a circuit.
It was pretty simple, only consisting of two electrodes: one made of zinc, the other of copper. He invented it in 1799, about 216 years ago.
Alessandro Volta was born on February 18, 1745 in Italy and died at the age of 85 on March 5, 1827 also in Italy.
Google posted this Doodle to honor his contributions to the world and also posted a little something on Google+ about it:
