Google Does Not Use GS1 Web Markup

Several months ago, we covered how Google does not use GS1 markup for ranking in the search results. Today, Google’s John Mueller clarified that Google currently does not use GS1 markup at all for any purpose in search, be it ranking, rich cards or any other purpose.

John said on Twitter “I’m not aware of us using that at the moment.” If they did, they’d document he said, “in general, we’d document it if we supported it directly.”

Should you add it? John Mueller said “putting more structure into your content can be useful regardless though.” So it can’t hurt to add more structured markup to your content from an SEO perspective but it won’t necessarily benefit you today. Maybe tomorrow or maybe never but it can help in other ways.
