Former Googler, Pedro Dias, posted on Twitter that YouTube, which is by default now over HTTPS, is showing their canonical tags to the HTTP version. This is a big SEO no-no.

Gary Illyes responded to Pedro telling him the situation is complicated:

I assume this is where Google told YouTube’s team to not do this and YouTube said we have to or something like that. So maybe Google decided to ignore the canonicals in this case? I am just guessing.

So Pedro asks a valid question, will Google deindex the site because of the HTTP to HTTPS redirect and canonical tag that sends the reverse message?

You have a 301 redirect from HTTP to HTTPS on YouTube and the canonical telling GoogleBot to go from HTTPS to HTTP. Too funny.
